Default a different world

I was wandering around the infamous Gastown district of Vancouver the other day, and asked this fellow if I could take his photo.

I don't have much experience photographing people and it was spontaneous... but in the future, what would you change?

I haven't done any post-processing... one thing that bothers me a little is the bright white on the guitar neck... but someone else said they liked it. I'm also not sure about the DOF... I wanted context without distraction. Is it ok?

Anything else you would change? Is it too bright? Give it to me straight!

Nice shot. I don't mind the glare off the guitar neck, it's the empty water bottle and coffee cup that are distracting for me. Just my opinion. I haven't got the courage(yet) to ask a stranger if I can photograph them, so hat's off to ya.

I'm getting braver about asking people, but it is still hard! I find it easier with buskers because I drop some change in and feel like I'm giving something back for the privilege of photographing them.

Thanks for the input... I agree that the garbage is distracting. I wonder if it's feasible to remove them? I've never tried that before.

I might try a squarer crop (like 4x5 as opposed to a 5x7 or straight out of camera). If you have a photo editing program with layers or adjustment brushes, you could try darkening and lowering the contrast slightly of the garbage and/or parts of the background to make the subject stand out more. Beware of heavy vignettes though. I like the glare (it's like he's being lit up) and love his expression.
