Default Pictures of my daughter

Here are some shots I took of my daughter earlier in the day. I'm very new to photography so any pointers would be more than welcomed.

I am using a Nikon D5000
Aperture f/1.8
Shutter Speed 1/60
ISO 400

wanted to avoid using a flash and was doing the shots indoors.

My two cents.

I like to suggest fixing the skin tone, add some sharpening and then crop out anything that doesn't add to the image. Sample for illustration purposes only.

I'm still trying to figure out how to adjust things such as skin tone and colors. Usually when I start messing with all that I overdo it and the picture looks pretty bad. Any suggestions on quick fixes for the skin tone would be great... since apparently the auto fix in windows gallery doesn't work so well.

I also have a picture of the same shot where I did crop the picture already I just did not think to post that one instead.

Ok so I'm not really sure in which way I was suppose to adjust the skin tone, but here it is. Let me know if its too much adjustment or not enough and in which way I need to go with it.

I think you have a bit too much red in the second picture. Here's my take on it. She is a beautiful little girl. Let me know if you want me to take it down.

That looks nice, could you explain what you did in adjusting the colors?

I used GIMP to adjust the levels and desaturate the red some.

Both images are heavy on red/magenta. It also seemed a little underexposed. My screen isn't calibrated, but this was the fix I gave it and the steps in Photoshop:

After cropping and cloning the wood floor out of the bottom,

1) Curves adjustment: "lighten" --> set this layer to 50%
2) Levels adjustment: "increase contrast 3"
3) Selective color adjustment: under Reds, slide Magenta to -65 and Yellow to -46
