Default Did ISO Contribute to Grainy Photo of Mischievous Toddler

Mischievous Toddler

This photograph was taken with flash, however, to me it appears that the final product is very grainy and overly noisy. When I took the photograph, the ISO was still very low.

I need advice on the clarity of this shot.

Nikon D5000
Focal Length 18mm
ISO200
f/3.8

Hi UrbanSophistic, welcome to dPS. Per the http://digital-photography-school.co...rum-rules.html, what specifically would you like critique on? Do you have the EXIF for this photo?

Hi Lori,

I'm sorry for posting outside of the rules. I hadn't visited that thread prior to posting. This is my first time using forums. I am editing the post to include my info and specific critique request.

Did you crop it like this or is this how you framed it in camera?

This is the way I framed the shot in the viewfinder. I didn't crop it.

Did you do any processing to it at all?

The only thing I can think is that perhaps by uploading the picture through my iPhoto application maybe the file was compressed or something. Other than that I haven't edited the picture's exposure, sharpness or shadow.

I wouldn't think at ISO200 you would have much of a noise problem, so this is definitely perplexing. I noticed on Flickr though that the largest size available was around 600 px, so maybe there some compression somewhere along the way.

As Mike said, it is strange that you got such noise level with ISO 200.

Did you shoot RAW? Perhaps you shot JPEG and your camera settings are somehow set that they produce noise (excessive sharpness?). Does your camera have some sort of noise reduction system?

For such cases, consider using software like Noiseware or Noise ninja to deal with noise.

She's really cute

Perhaps you took this picture at one of the more basic quality levels? The only "noise" I see is in the background. I do have a hard time believing that this was taken at 18mm and wasn't cropped, as I can't get anywhere near as close on myself when trying to repeat the picture.
