Learn to use a very basic rule of composition called "the rule of thirds." Picture a tick tack toe grid super imposed over your viewfinder (or screen, or photo)...at any of the four points where those lines intersect is usually the best place to position your subject..regardless of what it is. Most will agree that a center positioned subject, vertically and horizontally, will make for a very boring photo composition. Also use those horizontal lines as to where you want to place your horizon line so that you'll have a 1/3 - 2/3 (foreground vs background). It's not uncommon for people new to photography to place everything smack in the middle...make a mental note to look at works of art, or even ads on TV and magazines. More often than not, you'll see the rule of thirds being used.
Hope this helps Vince
