My critique. He has raccoon eyes caused by overhead lighting. Portraits are never done with overhead lighting. He is too close to the background. He should have been out six or eight feet from it. Lastly I think the object behind him is a portion of the USA flag, but it could just as easily be a red and white striped piece of cloth. You know, but we do not.

I used to use the flag as a backdrop and I hung it on the wall at an angle and low enough so the stars were behind the head of the subject. That way there was absolutely no doubt as to what it was on the background
