Question Please Help :)

Today was my 1st time using "Soft Light" on my photos. But I feel that it made the darks too dark (in some instances) and the white a bit too bright.

Feel free to play with it or give some insight on how to fix this.

ETA: both of the boys' hair is just gone. and my husbands face could be lightened up. How should i go about this?

What light did you use? -- it looks quite like harsh sunlight to me. Softness of light is determined by relative size. The larger the light source, the softer the light. Since the sun is essentially a tiny ball of bright light, it will be very hard light. You can use the on board flash at a low power to fill in the details.

Your EXIF would be useful per the critique rules.

The first thing that stands out to me is that the subjects don't seem to be in focus, rather than the lighting. As far as the lighting, you might also want to change where you're positioning the light and how you're diffusing it. So, like ispeakinmath asked, it would also be helpful to know more about the lighting.
