Default 35mm low light

I am having difficlty getting things sharp due to low light.....is this too blurry?? Maybe I shouldn't be using f1.8 for indoor baby pictures?? I just hate using flash (all I have is built-in).

JBOY2

f/1.8
1/50
ISO 800

Thanks,

I think it is just the DOF. The left eye is in focus, but the rear or right eye is out. That would be from the large aperture. According to my DOF calculator at those settings (35mm f1.8), @ 1 meter (3.3') you get a DOF of .05 meters (1.97"). If you backed up to 3 meters (9.8') you would get .5 meters (19") for DOF. Seems to me you could keep the open settings, just back up a bit and then crop the picture fill the frame, and lets face it, with a D5000 you have MP to spare.

Beautiful kid by the way, love his eyes and the catch light in the pupil is lovely. You have beautiful shadows on the left side of the face and the lighting works really well for me.

I agree about the eye being out of focus a bit (I'm still confused by that calculating thing!) but I don't think it is blurry. I think the picture is engaging - something about the sweep of his hair takes your eye across the photo. And those eyes are adorable!

I see your dilemma but you should invest in an external flash. That way you can bounce it off a wall either behind or to the side of you. It really does help with the light situation.
