Default First Pictures with a DSLR

After a while thinking about it, I gave up my 35mm and finally bought a DSLR. I took my newphew out for a couple portrait shots to give to my bro on his upcoming birthday. I am wondering about the exposure. Should I have used a fill flash on the right side? Any other critiques would be appreciated.

I don't know about fill flash.

Bear with me I could be talking bull. My worry is that you may have overdone the skin smoothing. The eyebrows are crystal sharp but looking just below the skin feel unnaturally smooth. Especially on his right cheek, the left of the photograph.

The second thing that I would suggest is sharpening the Irises of his eyes somewhat. I don't know why it looks a little fuzzy. In both cases I'm talking after looking at the image in large.

He's a good looking lad. You've really caught his stare well. Well done.

I completely agree about the skin smoothing. I wasn't sure how to get around his childhood acne and that it was 34 degrees outside and his cheeks were almost blood red. I may have went overboard though, Thanks for pointing that out.

If thats the case I suggest that you ask for some help in the post processing section. Theres people there who know a whole lot about fixing some of these problems.
