You could also try to use extreme dynamic range as an alternative. The first image is too balanced. Sometimes we can create an impact by highlighting or even blowing out certain interest points.

I borrowed the kid before packing it in last night, and came up with this based on the recommended reading, watching and suggestions. Thanks guys, I think this is coming along nicely (now I have to work on posing). I can definately see how a hair light would help to separate his hair from the background. Oh well, I guess I am going to have to save for another light.

As an aside, do you think I could get away with a CFB and snoot it somehow for now?

Looking good. I use one of those plastic Chinese units as my hair light. They are small, lightweight, powerful and cheap!
