Default New to Photography - Critique Please?

I have a portrait photo I would like critiqued. This one is of my son, who is 2 and not easy to get on camera. Both were taken with my Nikon CoolPix L20 (which I hope to upgrade from someday...). I've been messing around with black and white too. Thank you!

*Had to edit. Didn't realize only one pic per day, sorry about that!!

Also, I am pretty sure this was shot at 1/30 and F 3.1 as that is the auto settings for portrait mode. The only way I can really change this on this camera (as far as I know) is through the zoom function. Sorry for not knowing much yet, still learning!!

Samantha welcome to DPS. A couple of things to help you out. In the critique section, they ask that you please only post one image. post your EXIF data so we can see the camera settings, and lastly they ask that you be specific with what you want critiqued, whether it be lighting, crop, focus, composition or whatever. You'll more than likely get a better response this way.

I used my Nikon Coolpix L20 (a little point and shoot digicam), Portrait Mode, and it has auto ISO, so I'm not really sure on that or the mm used either, and the flash was on.

I'm wondering how the lighting and composition was in this photo?

Hi and welcome! What a fun picture of your son!
As a portrait, I would wish to see more of his face. I am also a little distracted by the bright white stripe on his shirt, taking focus away from his face.

Thank you! It was one of the few I could get that came out decent, he is all over the place! Maybe next time try a solid colored shirt to keep the distractions down and aim for a full face shot to help?

I like how the stripes pop. I'd like to see a little more of the face, maybe from a bit lower angle. The lighting and contrast are great, and relate a very nice feel to the shot.

By the way, it's one THREAD in the same forum per 24 hours. You can put up to 4 pictures in one post. You can put 1 thread per forum per day...ie 1 in SYS, one in critique, one in General Chit Chat, etc.

Welcome to DPS!! Can't wait to see some more of your portraits!!

Nope. Sticky says: "Only ONE new critique request per day (24 hour period) for ENTIRE critique section. Choose your image carefully.
Please post only ONE image in the thread. If you need to show more, link it to your set. If you post more than one, the other will be deleted at the moderators discretion. "

That's a very nice image.
Each picture has a story to tell.
You are good at holding the camera!

I like the perspective but I also wish I could see more of his face.
