I was reading this thread and thought it may be of interest to you. I'm still not sure what happened at the track meet, but my gut level feeling is you managed to get yourself into a weird state by accidentally locking exposure readings or scrolling a dial or something. The comments about midway down in that thread would explain the chicken thing exactly how I anticipated, that it was adjusting for the highlights in the grass and the chicken and so was forced to underexpose in order not to blow them out. That forum, incidentally, is where I'll send you next if we can't come up with a good answer here!

Thanks for directing me to that forum. I'm going to take some time to read through what they have there and see if I can learn anything. What I have picked up is that some people feel that the K200D under-exposes to a certain degree (but obviously not as much as I experienced.) It's still raining cats and dogs so no chance today to take any shots in the sun to try out new settings. But we're thankful for the rain!
