What a great shot of the Moon, Pauline. That 400 mm has come in handy, hasn't it? Thanks for sharing.

Great shot, Pauline! The Moon is fun to shoot, isn't it? I've been photographing the Moon since my teenage years, and learned early on how surprisingly bright it is. Then, when using a little Kodak Brownie box camera, I found I had to create an artificial aperture (a piece of black paper with a small hole in it) to stop down the Brownie's fixed f/stop so as not to overexpose the bright Moon image.

Many newbie photographers with automated cameras soon learn that one can not count on the AUTO mode to determine a suitable exposure. And, that's a good learning experience that encourages them to flip over to MANUAL setting, even though it might seem a bit daunting to them. The Moon is a great teacher!

I see your avatar says "Box camera to digital." Here's an history of my life with cameras:

Nice work, I've got to give this a try one of these evenings.

Thank you Tito. The 400mm has certainly added a new dimension.

Hi Pauline,

Great shot, I'm "playing" with the moon too, haven't got anything as good as you have just posted. Recently bought myself a EF 400mm and hope to make good use of it!

Any tips, or care to explain the detail behind your shot?

Ian

Thank you Ian. Unfortunately the AF on my 400mm is not working so it is all manual focusing, and with the eye-sight starting to fail I don't think I can improve much on this one. They do say practice makes perfect, so I'll keep practicing :-)
