I've got my camera set now so I can only focus on the back. Initially I would forget that I had done it and get mad because my picture was out of focus. It took a minute to get used to but I really do like using it now. Since I'm shooting sports, I have the AI Servo mode set and will use the back button and blast away on the shutter button when ready without skipping a beat.

It depends on the situation. When I want to shoot as soon as focus lock has been obtained (such as when using Servo AF) I definitely use the shutter button focus. When I'm composing a still life or landscape, I turn off the shutter button focus and only use manual + the rear AF button.

Must be a nikon thing: on bodies with both buttons, one can set each to work independently of the other. One for AF-S one for AF-C.
