I set my camera to the smallest aperture (biggest number right?) and I still didn't get a super blurry background. It's an old Sony F828 advanced point and shoot. If anyone knows how to trick the camera into a better DOF, I would really appreciate a few tips. This is the photo I am talking about.
![]() It occured to me as I was writing this, that I could probably use the Macro setting, but I don't know if that would be much different? Thanks for looking! ETA: OK, maybe I was wrong, I thought it was at the biggest number, guess I was wrong. Here's EXIF Camera: Sony DSC-F828 Exposure: 0.077 sec (1/13) Aperture: f/2.2 Focal Length: 12.5 mm ISO Speed: 200 Exposure Bias: -0.7 EV Flash: Off, Did not fire

Actually, a small aperture/large f-number leads to a deeper depth of field, not a shallower one. You want to go the other way 'round: use a wider aperture with a smaller f-number.
How much you blur the background depends on a bunch of factors, not just the aperture. But you'll get more background blurring with:
You actually have one of the better P&S cameras to get background blur. You have a 2/3" sensor, and a lens that's capable of f/2.

Thank you so much for your response! I just started playing with this camera (it's my husband's) and I'm only starting to figure all of the manual modes out. I just looked in the manual and realized my bigger/smaller mistake. I think I'm slowly starting to catch on. I will definitely be trying all of those ideas to try to understand this all a bit better. Thanks for your help!
