Default How to make this picture happen?

Hi, I'm new to the board and am trying to learn everything I can. I so enjoy being on here. Having fun.

My question is: How do I make/compose a shot to make it look like I'm holding the sun between my fingers as it is setting?

You know, the shots that always get e-mailed around of people holding the sun in their hands or looks like they have someone standing in their hands.

Can someone explain the setup of that for me?

Thanks in advance.

Kim

This may be kind of tough if you are doing a self portrait, but the set up is simple if you have someone to help you, The example of holding someone in your hand would be easier with three people. One to do the camera adjustment, one for a foreground subject, and one for the background subject. The foreground subject would stand with arm outstretched palm up, the background subject would stand far enough back behind the palm to make it look like they were smaller, and therefore standing in the palm. Whomever is using the camera will make any minor adjustments to composition in the viewfinder, and make the snap. It's just a simple vanishing point trick is all. Or, just use photoshop!
Have fun!

Use a tripod. Situate your free hand or fingers around the sun or whatever and shoot. Or use a timer and get in front of the camera. That will take some trial and error. Or photoshop it.

Everything what the others have said but just to add my own flavour
  • Put your camera on Tripod
  • Take a test shot of the sun and the scenery (you are trying to get the Av and Tv value right)
  • Then ask someone to hold the sun (or atleast pose as if they are holding the sun)
  • Set your camera to manual
  • Key in Av and Tv values
  • Use flash along with the Av and Tv values
  • Click and you have your photo

The use of flash is to make sure that the person holding the sun does not come out under exposed.

Hope this helps.

Cheers

i took this one by focusing on my hand, and putting my fingers on either side of a flash that was pointing toward me from the other side of the room.

You can also try this:
Set the lens to wide angle
Set the aperture to F8 or F11
Place the sun on the outer edges and not on center of the frame.
Compose the scene, and shoot.
Using an eight star filter also helps a lot making the bright sun into an 8 pointed star.

Thank you everyone. Just thougt it would be something cool to do with my children during the Summer time, when it actually warms up a bit. I'd be a mean parent to make them play my games outside these days

Thanks again and have a great day.
