The new version of the 70-200 2.8 VR II is supposed to get rid of the soft edges when used on a FX camera (D700) -- ok, if THAT is the case, does the VR II accomplish this with the other lenses it is being installed on?? It may be too early for this question, but if an answer is available, I would like to hear it. MAny THANKS!!

This is true (and has been documented), but in real-world applications it's essentially negligible.

It's a completely new lens design. VR has nothing to do with corner performance.
... just ordered mine today.

For most applications it is, it's only when you're focusing close that you lose focal length. At most, you'd have to move 2.5' closer to your subject.

BTW, the 18-200 DX VR II also lose focal length as you focusing close.

Frankly that doesn't bother me, the corner performance on the VR1 was a deal-breaker for me.

Then you will like the new version. As a bonus, the VR II is very effective. I think I'll keep mine since I can use my other 70-200 lenses.
