Question Nikons new vr ii

The new version of the 70-200 2.8 VR II is supposed to get rid of the soft edges when used on a FX camera (D700) -- ok, if THAT is the case, does the VR II accomplish this with the other lenses it is being installed on?? It may be too early for this question, but if an answer is available, I would like to hear it. MAny THANKS!!

The VR isn't the only thing that's been upgraded in the new 70-200. It's likely any improvements in sharpness/vignetting on FX bodies is due to changes in the optics rather than the vibration reduction system. At the moment, there's only one other lens that has the VRII is the new 18-200 and it's a DX lens, so it probably was engineered for improved performance on an FX body.

The new 70-200 f/2.8 VR II also loses focal length as you focus closer (128mm instead of 200mm).

This is true (and has been documented), but in real-world applications it's essentially negligible.

It's a completely new lens design. VR has nothing to do with corner performance.

... just ordered mine today.

I may wish it is a true 200mm later but right now it is just right for indoor use with my D3.

For most applications it is, it's only when you're focusing close that you lose focal length. At most, you'd have to move 2.5' closer to your subject.

I'm still testing mine and there are some people already returning theirs or cancel their orders.

BTW, the 18-200 DX VR II also lose focal length as you focusing close.

Frankly that doesn't bother me, the corner performance on the VR1 was a deal-breaker for me.

Then you will like the new version. As a bonus, the VR II is very effective. I think I'll keep mine since I can use my other 70-200 lenses.
