A couple of examples would be most helpful, but off the cuff I'd say lighting and contrast.

i'm not sure if they still have this paper. it was called duraflex, a kodak brand. it is like plastic and prints come out metallic. i used this material when i was still doing prints from color negatives.

Default well...

well if you were to look at professional pics...the really artsy ones like of maternity etc, the skin always seems to have a sort of sheen to it...other than a flat blueish gray......that kind...

sorry I was talking about digital photos

here is an example of some edits I did to a recent leaves picture....this is not quite what I want, but slightly similar vs the other photo....

I think the lighting and contrast might be an issue.

My goal is to create photos with as little editing as possible..because when I edit I always feel less of myself because I couldn't achieve that contrast or brighteness or saturation, etc, on my own without having to edit...

You would do yourself a big favor by completely ridding your mind of this thought. It is not cheating, cheap, or weakness to process your images. Heck post processing is an art within itself.

Black and white photography can be hard, its about tonal value rather than colours so what your looking for in a scene is lots of contrast, strong shapes, lots of textures. Over cast days are great for this type of photography as are thundery skys.

One thing that can help while taking the picture is checking your exposure if your doing it automaticaly sometimes underexposing a bit can help it isnt always the case.

Here is an example of the silvery look I was talking about.

Dorian Eve Photography, Lake Norman Photographer, Triad Photographer

If you see in her gallery there are many pictures that have this look - maybe silver is a bad way to explain it but why do they look so bright? Is it overexposed photos turned b/w??

Just to add to zona5101's comments - This attitude will really inhibit you from producing the best images you can. Taking the photo with the camera is only part of way to producing a good image. Editing takes you the rest of the way.

How are you "putting your pics into" black and white? If you are just using the camera's black and whit mode you will never get the contrast you are seeing in pro pics. You need to learn to edit your color photos in order to get a good looking black and white image.
