For best results you should shoot Raw if your camera has the capability, or a color JPEG if it doesn't, and do the conversion to B&W within your editing program. Without knowing what kind of camera you're using, what editing program(s) you use, and perhaps what "B&W" means to you, I can't offer much more than those generalities. |

+1. Shooting in the camera's black and white is like shooting yourself in the foot.

Thanks. After posting this I googled and found out what you're saying such as NEVER use your cameras B&W!! Pick photo scenes with good contrast. Gloomy days are great. Lots of cloud action is wonderful. And above all - use your editing software. I tried it with an old photo and the results were great!
Thanks! Tammy |

I've also seen several resources that indicate it's a bad idea to use your camera's B&W mode to produce B&W images. That having been said, I'm just starting to get into B&W photography and I have been using my point and shoot in conjunction with my dSLR. I use the dSLR to capture the images in raw format, but since I have no idea what makes a good B&W image just by looking at a scene, I use the point and shoot in B&W mode so I can see quickly if the image in front of me might look good in B&W.
