The more pixels you have, the more you'll see the limitation of the rest of your (photo) equipment. When you print the images such that the pixels are the same in size (so the 18mp image will be printed larger than the 10mp image) it could be that the 18mp image is softer. This is because your lens has a maximum resolution as well, and when your sensor surpasses that no amount of extra pixels is going to make the photo any better.

Ahhhh brilliant I have learnt something new
 never did know how many pixels you needed to go to A4 thanks for the advice, and you know it never did pop into my mind about the crop but it is very true more pixels give you more room when cropping especial for composition. Great advice.
