Shooting Paintings on Canvas

How can I avoid what seem to moire effects when photographing paintings on canvas? I get an enhancement of the canvas texture and sometimes diagonal bands through the image when viewed on my monitor.

Any help would be appreciated.

Are the paintings behind glass also are you using flash?

The other thing is where are you shooting from in distance from the painting and what lens are you using or do you have available?

Just so we can have a better understanding of the technique your using now and what you have to work with
