Default Lens Question

I have to take Christmas card pictures this weekend of 11 kids ages 10 to 1.5 yrs old (my nieces and nephews). I have a 50mm and 28-135mm lens and I was wondering if I should rent a zoom lens (70-200mm). And if you have any other suggestion that would help me with this HUGE challange that would be great.

What photos are you planning on Amy?

Big group shot? Smaller groups of siblings, posed individual shots?

I think the lenses you have will manage the above, I'd only think about hiring a 70-200 if you are looking to grab some candid shots of them playing.

If you're going the group shot way - have you thought about a tripod and lighting?

I was planning on a group shots outside against a brick building.

In that case, I'd suggest you would be fine using the wider end of your telephoto. Personally, if you already have the gear, (or budget) I'd think about putting the camera on a tripod and using a remote shutter release - this will enable you to get out from behind the camera - it's much easier to control groups of kids if they can see your face!

Good luck!

Think the advice above is spot on when choosing lenses its best to think how much of the back ground you want in the shot with the larger zoom lenses you are going to get a tighter shot and would let you get farer away so you could give the person room to feel comfortable. But as its a group shot you probably need the wide angle
