You'd be amazed at how bright the moon really is. There's the Moony 11s rule: ISO, 1/iso shutterspeed and f/11 aperture.

So, if youre on 100iso, you'd have a 100ISO, 1/100s, f/11 exposure. Of course, you can open up the aperture a stop and speed up your shutterspeed to get 100ISO, 1/200s and f/8.

Set camera to manual mode...........spot meter..........f/8 ( i use f/8 because that is where my lens is it's sharpest).........tripod..........in-camera timer............lock mirror up.

I spot meter off the moon and then underexpose about 2/3 stop. Take several shots so you get a good focus. You'll find one or two that has the focus spot on.

In PP i added quite a bit of saturation to get some color in it. 2 layers of sharpening ...........first with edge sharpening and radius 1.0 and second with USM and radius 2.0

Here is my result with 420mm lens at f/8.....................

Dont take this the wrong way: the image is too sharpened and VERY noisy.

Here's a crop taken from a shot at 200mm, f/11 and 1/60s and 100ISO, handheld. Admittedly, it could be sharper, but I attribute that to the 18-200 lens I was using at the time.
