Default suggestions on set up for product photography

I have a friend who owns a coffee shop here in town and I'm designing some promotional material for him (I'm a graphic designer). Instead of him sending me a bunch of pictures he finds online to use I would like to try taking some pictures of his actual product to use in the promotional material.
He is advertising specials on the bags of their coffee beans. I was thinking maybe of setting the bags (which are white with a colour label on the front) on top of a bunch of coffee beans sort of thing (kinda like the image below).

My question is...I will be doing this indoors most likely as it's not very sunny out around here these days. I'm just wondering since I don't have any special lighting equipment or anything like that if there are any tips or special tricks I can do to help with the lighting? What about a backdrop?

I'm shooting with a Nikon D60 with the kit 18-55mm lense.

Any tips or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks

i love doing staged shots in my kitchen.....and.....without a lot of pro gear.....

i would almost suggest a darker green backdrop for your coffee and the hill of beans.....i think it would add a decent amount of contrast to the reds and browns in the beans to make them say warmth and good morning......

Exposure: 6 sec (6)
Aperture: f/11
Focal Length: 42 mm
ISO Speed: 200
Exposure Bias: -1 EV
Flash: Flash did not fire

in this shot i used an old green tablecloth......sent through the dryer to avoid wrinkles and draped for some focus and drama.....the lighting was all tungsten.....using the lights above my sink on the right and some ceiling spots on the left.....although the lights are high....they are at about 45 degrees to the product on either side......i definitely used a tripod because i needed a long exposure for the insufficient lighting and for the depth of field that would keep all of the product in focus.....
