Your D90 has a DOF preview button: use it.
If you really have the time and sheer bloody-mindedness to figure it out in actual numbers, there are several DoF calculators online: just google it.

Your depth of field depends on a number of factors, so "how to set it" isn't necessarily as straightforward as you might think. Also, we have no idea if you want to make your DoF shallow or deep.
First off, the lens you're using has an almighty effect on DoF because of focal length and max. aperture. The longer your focal length, the shallower your DoF becomes, and the larger your aperture setting (smaller the f-number), the shallower your DoF becomes. The problem with attempting this with an 18-55 kit lens, is that you have relatively short focal lengths and relatively small max. apertures. Secondly, two other factors that have a huge impact (possibly even more than aperture) are your distance from your subject, and the distance of the subject from the background. The closer you are to your subject, the shallower the DoF becomes (this is why you always have a narrow DoF with macro shots), and the more distance between the subject and the background, the more the background gets blurred.
