It really depends on the type of photography you want to take.

bryanmansell.co.uk: photography this type of image requires no flash and a long exposure (keeping the shutter open for 5 to 10 seconds).

If you want to shoot people in a dark location you will need flash to light and capture them without blur.

What type of night time photos do you want to take?

G'day Karl,

You have almost the same set up as me.
As you become more accomplished and confident you'll soon realise the limitations on your gear.

I've recently been asked to do some intimate photography at a conference, so I bought a 50mm f1.8 lens. Boy does it take some great pics in low light. I also bought a 420Ex11 external flash. I just love it. You can bounce it off ceiling and walls and get the lighting just right. It takes some trial and error effort, but well woth it.

I did a local photo course here in Sydney and it was brilliant. If you can try and do a course through TAFE or an Evening College, its well worht it. But I guess just keep reading and looking at this forum, there are so many good tips and hints to get you going and just take heaps of photos at all settings and see how they turn out.

I mostly shoot in AV and change my aperature to suit and try to keep my shutter speed up by changing ISO, unless I'm using a tripod. So much to learn so much to do. Keep on shooting.

Cheers,

John W
