Unhappy I am a little upset...

Ok...so when I have a photo shoot my photos always come out nice But today we decided to go out to our local water park so I took along my nice Canon 50D camera with me so I can capture some nice photos of my girls...

It was super bright outside so I had it on AV with my ISO set to either 100 or 120 and all the photos with my girls coming down the slide were DARK they were coming down a yellow slide and my photos didnt come out like I wanted too....

What couldve happend?
So sad but at least they were free from Mommy

Your exposure meter was most likely exposing for the water and thus underexposing everything. Same as snow pictures, you have to open up a stop or more.

It is so sad that I cannot even take good photos of my family....

Pay attention to the metering patterns. Canon 50D has 35 area Eval, Center weighted, Partial, Spot. Partial or spot may be better for this case.

Features such as EV compensation and AE lock are very useful when shooting in AV/TV modes.

If you shot in RAW you could more than likely get some usable shots out of them.

Where can I find the EV compensation or the AE lock?

You need to pay attn to where your focal point is (look for the red dot). You need to pick that one, not the camera otherwise it'll pick the areas with the highest contrast and will focus on that. If its NOT pointing at your kids, it will not expose them properly - but it WILL blow out your sky.

What you can do is meter for the sky and use fill flash to brighten up your kids face (yes, even in daylight) BUT, if your flash will not reach them, you may have to live with the blown out sky...

50D manual page 101 and 103.

Use EV+/- to adjust the overall exposure (e.g., snow, water reflections). AE lock (partial/spot) is liked the old day when we took a closeup meter reading of the face and recompose.

You can move away from Manual once you master these two features. I programmed two buttons on my D3 to switch metering from matrix/eval metering to center and spot.
