Default Shooting in RAW

hello everyone! im a beginner in digital photography. i just bought my dslr and been reading a alot about digital photography here. DPS is really a great site for beginners!
i've been wondering lately about what are the advantages of shooting in RAW? i really have no idea about shooting in RAW. Whats the difference if i shoot in JPEG or in RAW?

This is an oft talked about topic. It basically boils down to your post processing. Shooting in RAW will always require a conversion to .jpg, .tiff, etc. while shooting in JPG doesn't.
