Default Bland Photos

I just got a Nikon D-40. I've been taking some practice photos with different settings, different locations, different times of the day, flash/no flash, etc. And, all the pics I take seem to lack richness of color. They all seem a little flat to me. I only have the built in flash at this time. I don't know if it is the camera or me. Probably me. I'll try and post a pic or two when I get home. Not sure how to make the colors more vivid without having to touch the photos up.

Thanks,

Donna

Check you settings under the shooting menu the camera is set to standard which is default, change it to vivid and see if that helps. i believe it is under the camera symbol on that camera also.

Yes, the D40 has a vivid setting. If you are shooting in RAW mode it won't matter because the color information that Nikon uses to create vivid mode is in the RAW photograph. Shoot RAW and edit in UFRAW program and output to Gimp or get Photoshop and the Nikon RAW plugin. But if you dont' do all the techie stuff then by all means shoot in vivid mode.

When you post your picture. Make sure you put the EXIF information up as well. Then we can see the camera settings.

I'll have to get the Exif info. I could not find the vivid setting on my d40. Seems like I should be able to get a photo every now and then that has some color to it. Here is a typical example of what I am getting. I blurred out the face. The second photo is edited to enrich color.
