He is over exposed and out of focus. Looks like the camera was set to around f/5.6 or less. His face is probably in focus but his medals are not. Either speed up your shutter speed or raise your f/stop. You should probably put the camera in A priority and set the aperture at f/8 or f/11 and let the camera pick the shutter speed. Also look at the bottom of the view finder as you look through it. You will see a scale with 0 in the middle. This is your meter. And it should read fairly close to 0 when it is pointed at your subject. And make sure your subject is not facing directly toward or away from a bright sun. Too much light flattens the subject and washes out the colors.

Hhmmmmm. I shot this in auto. Here is the exif:

Metering=matrix
Shutter=1/400
Apeture=F5
Exposure Mode=Auto
Exp. +/- = 0
Focal Length=38mm'Flash Mode=Built In/TTL

Thanks for the page number info, Love DSLR.

Also, JF Sanders, what if the scale doesn't read "0", what should I do? I must have moved during the shot for it to be out of focus???

I am new to exploring more advanced shooting techniques and pretty much have relied on the camera for automatic settings. And I had really great results with my point and shoot Cybershot. Now that I have a DSLR (Nikon D 40), I'm trying to improve my skills.
