Default How did he achieve this?

I found some amazing shots from a photographer that all share this similar surreal lighting effect: SoulMyst's deviantART gallery

Can someone explain to me how these shots were achieved? It's not the same lighting pattern every time, but they're all very similar. A filter maybe? Photoshop (I personally doubt it).

Thanks!

Hard to say what method was used from star filters to photoshop. But most likely a combination of several. You might put a UV filter to good use, smear petroleum jelly on it in various patterns and make some shots. Leave the central area clear for non distorted areas.
Liquid soap also gives unusual patterns and colors.

ps that is the only good use I know of for UV filters.

Its not bad, but when you start using it for everything, it amounts to a bit of overkill...and gets staid very fast

Agreed: it's fine as a one-off or for a particular "set" of photos, but this kind of thing is excessive.

Same here.

Have you tried asking SoulMyst how he's doing it? ....even though it most likely is just Photoshop and not a fancy camera trick.

This should be a photoshop work. Try adding a texture layer(with any pattern you like) on top of a background image layer, and play with different blend modes like overlay, Multiply, etc.. and also adjust the layer opacity as well. Then do some color corrections to the BG layer as desired. I am sure it will give similar results.
