Default High School Football

This is the reason I had to rent this beast.

full gallery here.

Selected highlights (click for full res and exif):

Also had to buy a monopod to heft the Sigma, the one I borrowed from my photog teacher wasn't up to the weight. Went with an Induro MXA-34, should last me quite some time (up to 17 lbs.).

As far as shooting went, it's tough to go from tele zoom to tele prime, I'm just not used to being locked in at 300mm. Focus was also an issue, not sure if it was just that lens or what, but I've never missed so many shots due to bad focus.

I'm planning on posting marching band pictures later on, but I have five assignments this weekend. One of the staff guys at the newspaper I work for is getting married, so basically the entire photo staff is going to be at the wedding, leaving one freelancer (me). However, this does mean that I get to shoot a sorority jello wrestling fundraiser thing on Sunday. I feel creepy already . . .

Yeah, I know how stadium lights are. You did a great job on that front just getting everything bright enough to see.

The only real problem I see in the photographs is that there are people I consider important to the photo that are cut off. Blockers in the first two and tackler's feet in the last one.

Not really sure what you can do about that with a prime lens other than move.

Yeah, the other problem was that the sidelines weren't very wide, probably only about 15 feet from the white line to the fence. I'm used to having a track and more grass. The other issue was people walking in front of me if I wasn't right up on the line.

So I am wondering if there was a flag thrown after the play where the top picture was taken. Because from the picture it is quite clear that the guy in the right side of the frame is blocking in the back.

Haven't the slightest idea, I don't really remember individual plays.

Well hopefully you get some good shots at the jell-o wrestling matches....I'm expecting some photos from that shoot. Fair is fair they deserve some screen time too you know! LOL!

So I was mistaken, it was jello tug-o-war . . . this is the only picture that I have up, and you're going to be disappointed.

I have been "volunteered" to take picture for the marching band this year -- they saw some I took before that I don't think were very good. Also thye know this is a learning experience -- at least I get a field pass.

Couple of questions -- what did you start out with for WB? and it was nice to see what you got with the high ISO. Did you do any post processing such as nosie reduction, etc.
