How do you achieve this kind of shot? The sort of stuff you would see in a catalogue or gap advert.

Nice exposure on the skin and sort of washed out background with being too blown out.

Any help much appreciated!

Spot meter for your model, and make sure the background is sufficiently lit.

and use your exposure compensation to get that washed out look if you have the time. if not then just do it in post.

You also may want to use an off camera flash to fill in some shadows.

Conversely: Shoot in Manual and purposefully overexpose.

If you are serious about going in that direction, you'll want to get light difusers and reflectors. I have no doubt these were used in the samples (especially the top one) you showed us.

Thanks for the replies.

I have an off camera flash, reflector and diffuser to light the person properly (or at least make a decent attempt of it). Is it just a case of over exposing the background a little to get the final effect?

So shooting into the sun and using fill flash/reflectors should do it?
