Default white balance color conversion

Hi: Thanks in advance. I am using Canon Digital Rebel XTi and am concerned with the wB shift feature. Please explain what a MIRED is and How that relates to color filters.
Canon indicates that one shift is eqivalent to a +/- mired shift of 5. Would this shift replace the need for using color filters like 81A,81B, etc?.

I was using only color temperature to move between warm and cool colors, but i never use that WB shifting option [i did once and saw the results but i didn't like it, so that i keep to use original WB and i change it by Photoshop].
