Default How do you make a "rainbow" looking sunglare?

Hi, I'm a newby here on DPS, but I'm trying to soak up as much information as possible!! One thing I've always wondered while "stalking" my favorite photographer's blogs was how they get such goregous sun glares! Whenever I try to...well...it just doesn't have the same "rainbow" effect to it.
Here's an example from the wonderful Jamie Delaine (i LOVE her blog)...

I only have an old point and shoot camera so is it possible to get this effect and if not, how would you do it on a dSLR?
Thanks!

I'm not sure if you can do it with a point-and-shoot, but on a dslr, you'd want to close the aperture as much as possible, like f/22.

Each lens has different flaring characteristics. Some will give you more "rainbows" than others. There are others here who probably know the details better than me, but it may depend a lot on the camera. I find that getting a good sunburst is fairly hard to do, since lenses are designed to avoid this kind of problem nowadays -- I had to twist and turn all over the place to get the one in my Old Steam photo.

Most lens designers strive for NO ghosting or flare. That's the ideal, at least.

Getting flare on purpose can be stylistically useful, but very rarely.
