I woke up at 4 am to go shoot, but it was overcast and nothing looked good. Too bad, I'll try next time.

Perhaps the volcanic activity that produced the black basalt on the right came after the majority of impacts? Hence the right hand side is just as scarred, but it is under the lava. Since then there have been a greatly reduced number of impacts (maybe).

This probably all happened in the early stage of the moon around 3+ billion years ago.

After having some stunning weather the last 4-5 days, it really was not that flash yesterday. My first stop was at the local observatory, where it had cleared, but the moon had not yet reached the umbra. Then the cloud came back. As it thickened, I drove up the road for about 5 minutes and caught a glimpse of the moon entering the umbra. I drove back grabbed the others and we ended up driving another 30km or so into the Southern Alps.

Eventually found a good enough spot near Castle Hill and camped out there for the next few hours - until the moon fully entered the penumbra again about 1am. Really struggled with the photography for some reason. It was a lot more difficult to focus than previous nights when I'd been practising. I think it may have been the slightly turbulent atmosphere (there were still the odd clouds passing by). Not to mention the dew. Dew hoods don't help when you're looking straight up! I also had trouble with the longer exposures required due to the increased magnitude. The moon moves so quickly they blurred! Took nearly 300 shots during the evening, but they are nearly all out of focus or exhibit blurring caused by the moons motion on a longer exposure. EDIT Appears I'm not the only one around here. That makes me feel a little better.

Ironically, I think my two favourite shots are not of the eclipse, but one of the Milky Way when the Moon was at totality and it was nice and dark, and the other of the road and snowy mountains once the moon was nearly back to full.

Will post some piccies after I've tweak them a bit...

Cheers Gav

Not great photos (noisy, blurry) - but at least the clouds stayed away long enough for me to see the eclipse. These are straight out of the camera - no post processing.

Got up to try and shoot, but in this part of the USA, it was getting to light and the moon was almost at the western horizon. All I got was a bunch of over exposed blobs.
