Its been posted in the DIY section, but I made a string monopod for my camera.
I bought a 1/4'' key screw (which is the size of the thread in the both of the camera), drilled a hole in the top, and knotted the string around that. Then at the other end (The ground side) I tied it to a flat metal piece with 3 holes in it (not exactly sure what it is used for normally) glued it down and then wrapped it with electrical tape. I stand on the end on the ground then pull the camera taught and it seems to work pretty well. Then you can just wind it up and put it in your pocket.
