I’m the proud new owner of an SB600, now the growing/learning pains begin all over again.
I understand the use of exposure lock, EG. Spot meter for highlights on white shirt, lock exposure, recompose, focus and shoot. I’m assuming the principle is similar for flash value, I’ve re-programmed my D80’s FUNC button (it should be called “Funk”.. because its so funky…) to control the FV-Lock and when pressed the flash seems to punch out some metering/preflash sort of bursts. How do should one use FV-lock..? it sort of seems to negate the functionality of the TTL principle. When and how do you use FV-Lock? Have you ever used it in conjunction with exposure lock (which i use quite allot actually.. particularly in low light) I’d love to hear some examples. Thanks J

I've never used focus lock independently, I have my AE-L/AF-L button set to AE-L/AF-L ON. It's useful for focus-recompose in AF-C mode. A lot of times I'll use it if I'm spot metering too, but it's not necessarily essential.
Really, 90% of the time I ignore it.

i can see how using it conjunction with AF-C could help with the subject moving sideways at roughly the same focal lenth. currently i have my AE-L/AF-L locking only the Exposure, and shutter release half depressed locks focus (in AF-S only obviously) i'll explore how it works with your set-up when spot metering. the more i think about it it could be a logical solution, particularly when doing a mugshot in a room, not blowing highlights on the shirt but still filiing the room. hmmmm (ponders) thanks you

Er, yeah, ignore that last post. I read FV lock as focus value, not flash value. I've never needed the flash lock. I wouldn't worry about it too much.

Here's a blog post that seems to give a good summary of its use. Could be handy in a few situations.
