Default Probably a stupid question

I have been trying to focus using both a 55-300mm nikkor lens and a 30mm prime nikkor lens on my d3100. when I am close to my subject, they wont focus. I know this is probably a stupid question, but I am fairly new to this and need some help. Thank you!

How close to your subject are we talking about here? Lenses have a certain minimum focus distance depending on the lens. If you are closer than the lens's focal distance, the lens will not be able to focus.

The minimum focusing distance should be listed in your product guide that comes with the lens. The 55-300mm is 4.6ft or 1.4meters.
