I believe you still can use off-camera speedlight of any kind that has optical sensor with any kind of camera that has at least built-in flash...as flash trigger. You can use as many speedlights as you can ;D, with care..

I use the below 2 cheapy items to take photos http://digital-photography-school.co...-portrait.html (Please see and comment.. ty)

USD150 (bought by my wife in 2003)

+

USD 62

I own D5100 too, and I believe 1/200s is not sufficient to darken the background (while high f-number does not create the separation that you want and you suffer from defraction?), you may need ND filter + Strong fill Flash ?? With ND filter, you may able to stick to wide aperture.. And I believe you may want Polarized filter as he is wearing a spec, unless you can determine the family of angles.. but I never have any filter... May be experts will advise on this.

I personally don't think that 1 speedlight can overpower the sun. Perhaps you want to get 2-3 speedlights? LOL

After you said this it jarred my memory and that is what he told me.

As for meter/recompose, if you are in TTL flash you may have issues...

Why would I have issues?

Personally, I would probably take the shot the way I do most things...In Aperture mode with spot or center weighted metering and TTL FP or BL....I would expect to need to add a little + FEC.

soooo what does FP or BL and FEC stand for ?

thanks for the help....btw your avatar is sick!
Sorry for the Nikon jargon.... FP is high speed sync (my default setting), BL is Balanced Fill, FEC is Flash Exposure Compensation.

Often Meter/recompose can be an issue and you may need to use FEL.....it's very situational...

found this for you... Canon Professional Network - Flash exposure lock and compensation
