Default IS on or off for panning?

Should image stabilisation generally be on or off for panning?? I.e. will it try to correct for the deliberately moving background and thus blur the subject?

Depends on your lens (assuming this is Canon). If you only have one switch for IS (toggle on or off) then leave it off, it will interfere with you taking the shot. Some lenses will have a secondary IS mode for panning that will only compensate for the vertical axis and leave horizontal motion alone.

I shoot motor sport with, mostly, a Canon 100-400 lens..
For panning I always have IS set it in mode 2.

Nikon VR.. In "normal mode" it automatically detects panning and turns off the stabilization in the panning plane. But I seldom think to use it intentionally....

Thanks for the replies. I should have said, this is on a Sony Alpha with image stabilisation in the body. There is no mode adjustment on the image stabilisation so sounds like I should turn it off for panning.

Yeah, for Sony and Pentax users I think the general recommendation is to turn it off while on a tripod.
