Default Underexposed Images

Hello all,

I am new to this forum and to digital photography. I have a D7000 paired with Nikon 24-70mm. I have noticed that the images taken from this lens is always underexposed. I took some under a bright sunlight and it still was underexposed. Not sure if I have a bad copy or I am just missing something.

Any help regarding this issue would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you!

Yes and try to balance the metering by changing either the shutter speed or f stop. Thanks!

On top of your camera there is an Exposure Value (EV) button just behind the shutter release, press that and turn the main control dial and you can add or subtract the appropriate exposure value. It will stay at that setting until you turn it back to zero.

If you are having problems with that lens (especially in auto mode) and not seeing the underexposure in other lenses - it could have a sticky aperture, not opening up as much as possible. Such a thing can be caused by internal oil on the blades, or some other defect in the blades themselves. Since there's no aperture ring, the aperture sticking could also be happening in manual mode. A simple check for this is to look into the lens from the front - and stop the camera down - starting at 2.8 and checking every (full) stop going to f22. Press and hold the depth of field preview button, and make sure that the iris is opening and closing for each stop.

If it's happening across multiple lenses - I'd expect that it's your understanding of the metering system and/or the camera itself. Verify that you're exposing properly, verify that the camera is not in an auto bracketing mode, verify that you have no permanent exposure compensation dialed in.

utilize the exposure indicator, otherwise set the auto ISO settings from 200 to hi2. I believe that works

I think you should post some photos with exif data so that we can see if you have used the right settings (ISO, Aperture, Shutter Speed). This is one way to determine if you have been using the proper settings before anything else.

Cheers,

Grace
