WIth TTL flash, Manual mode will be easier for controlling the brightness of subject & background, DOF, without fear of underexpose or over expose (assumption : within GN range), with flash compensation. However, when I am not using TTL flash, i always switch to aperture mode in order to avoid over / under expose. Ya, same as Dough, i always use exposure compensation ....
I always use Sunset Scene to shoot sunset (when time is critical) as I still don't know how to set the best setting for sunset.. WB: Direct sunlight... exposure don't know.. etc etc. I use low-key scene to shoot cloudy dark sky... I believe I could only use manual mode to change the brightness of subject and background individually via nikon body, with flash. The aperture mode change both... So when you wish to increase the brightness of background only, you can conveniently make the shutter speed slower in manual mode without interrupt the aperture and the brightness of your subject hit by the flash. The exposure compensation just change both, not individual..(different story for Canon where they can use aperture mode to do this, i believe) This is how a noob like me use the camera.. I believe I can fly... I believe I will know light later..
