I've been reading the posts here on tips for getting good Vegas shots. I'll be going next week, and I'm taking my Canon T1i along. I am wondering what you all think would be the better lens to use -- the 18-55 kit, or my 50mm prime.
I LOVE my 50mm (1.8) prime and wind up leaving that on most of the time as a walkabout lens, and really don't use the 18-55 much at all since I got it. But, I've read some posts here and seen some samples where the really great Vegas shots were down at the 18mm end of the spectrum. I'll be mostly shooting at night since my days will be spent at the pool...and I'm thinking primarily of Strip shots like the Paris, MGM, NYNY, etc. Any thoughts? |

You might be right about the 18-55 being better in this case. I normally do have both with me, but, this time around I just want to take one and not bother with switching lenses while I'm walking about on the Strip. I'll be in and out of casinos, dinner, sight seeing, etc....and this time I'm feeling a bit lazy and want to take the best lens I can just leave on there and forget about.
Thanks for responding!!!! |

I'm going there on the 14th and have been strugling with the same question. I have lots of glass, but want to travel light. I am leaning toward my D700 with just my 28-300VR (which is equiv on an FX to an 18-200 on a DX body). I might take my 12-24 lens also, as I think wide is important to have.

Animalgurl make sure to practice some night/low light photography before you go. Knowing how to use ISO, exposure compensation, what metering mode, possibly bringing a light weight tripod... It'd be a bummer to come back with a lot of blurry overexposed shots of the strip.

Thank you guys for the tips and suggestions! In the end, I decided to take both just in case. I never can make a decision!!! And I'd rather have the glass I need in the hotel room at least...rather than not at all! Thank you all again for your input! And Kirbinster...have a great time!!!!
