Default New direction=New lens! But which one?

I am into Action Sports Photography, mostly motorcycle racing. I use my 70-200mm F/2.8 for almost everything.
But now we have a problem. My husband has decided to get into mountain bike racing! Crazy lighting, and very close up action. I cant get far enough away for my big lens.
So, which lens would be better? 35mm or 50mm? There are points in the track where I am literally a few feet away from the racers.
I think this lens would also be my people shooter for when someone needs portraits, so please keep that in mind.

Check out some pictures if you want to!

I'd say go for the AF-S 35/1.8. The 50 might be too close on a crop, depending on the framing you want. But ideally, a f/2.8 zoom (17-55 or 24-70) might be the better choice. This is where budget comes into play. When asking for a lens recommendation, it's generally best to say what you want to use it for, how much you want to pay, and what camera you're using.

Sorry, I didnt realize there was lens recommendation etiquette.

Mountain bike racing, which I stated. And also portraits when needed. Probably going to be used for Harescrambles and Enduros, which are motorcycle races where I will be very up close to the bikes. Close like, Ive been brushed by bikes before. Kinda scary, maybe a little dumb, but super fun and some awesome shots!

I dont want to spend thousands, but am willing to pay for good equipment.

Nikon D40, but will probably upgrade at some point.

Im basically just looking for pros and cons of each lens, from people who actually have used these lenses and have critique on them.

Not saying that you, personally, havent used the lenses in question, but there are a few people on this forum that seem to think they know everything and how dare someone else ask a question, or tell a tale. I dont want to spend my hard earned money on the wrong lens, and all the positive feedback I can get is appreciated.

Oh, I haven't used those lenses--I'm a Canon shooter. But I've used a 35mm and a 50mm on a crop and on a full frame, though, which is where my opinion on the field of view's usefulness is coming from. But if you only want to hear from those with experience in the specific lenses, I'll shut up.
