Default Time Lapse - Post Processing Pan and Zoom

Hi,

I was wondering if anyone had any tips for adding a pan into a timelapse in post production. I've done this using iMovies's ken burns effect with some success, but I was wondering if anyone had any tips for using higher resultion images so that the output from the pan is actually 1920x1080, as opposed to starting with a 1920x1080 image and cropping from that (basically, can I use a 16mp video for editing purposes and then crop so it looks good?). I tried this in iMovie but my computer (MacBook Pro 15" i5) doesn't seem to be able to handle it in iMovie, it just comes out as a black screen. Ive heard of using FInal Cut, but I'd rather not have to spend $300.

Thanks!
