You will generally find SLRS a lot more responsive than P&S cameras.
This includes focussing. However the speed of focussing can be lens dependant.

Have you ever used the Tamron lenses?

I've heard they are pretty good and the reviews seem good too, they are a bit noisey but I dont mind that!

Apparantly the Sigma lenses are good too?

Any opinions on them?

I have used the Tamron 17-50 F2.8, however It doesn't see much use as I now have better lenses (for me) and I didn't like it's low light focussing ability.

I also own a Tamron 18-250 and that is the only lens I take with me if I have to travel real light. For a "super zoom" it is ok and meets my needs.
