Default How to achieve this sun/lighting effect??

Hey all, I've been wanting to achieve this effect on a couple shoots I've been doing, but I haven't had any luck. Maybe I'm not going at the right time of day? I was curious if any of you could direct me towards which settings, f-stop, iso, etc... on how to achieve this.

If it matters, I have a canon 5d mkii, prime 85mm f/1.8, 430exii flash w/diffuser.

Much appreciated! I think this effect is pretty cool.

I've searched everywhere and I can't seem to find any tips on creating this. I know it was during the "golden hour" at least.

Its just lens flare. Your subject has to be back-lit, the sun has to be at a relatively low angle, ie late afternoon. You will need to angle your lens by trial and error to find the position where the flare appears. Sometimes it helps to have a filter (uv, sky) on the front on the lens to get one more glass surface to get the refraction. This can also be done in post but like a lot of edits not always easy to make it look believable. And it could be a combination of natural flare elements enhanced in post. There is also some post toning/coloring done with the images besides the sun flare.

Ok gotcha. I'll definitely give the angles a try. Any idea where to find some toning tutorials that may touch on this type of look?

I think the hazy, golden tone makes the photo interesting more so than the lens flare. I tried to recreate that look with a fog photo once and never could make it look natural.

Yeah, that's what I'm more or less after. Something about that toning makes the picture really cool. The lens flare would be a bonus I guess.

Definitely some good actions here. I didn't exactly see what I was looking for though. :\

Thanks for the effort though.

Try using the Flare-Up (Golden) action from Totally Rad Actions 2. It works well for giving backlit photos that glow.
