You can try sending a PM to the OP of this thread - Antelope Slot Canyon, Page Arizona (I don't think she will mind)

You will need a guide to visit the upper antelope canyon (Which is the more popular, easier to get to, and often more crowded section of the canyon.
it used to be that no guide was required for the Lower Antelope Canyon. But that appears to have changed. If I recall either canyon you go to will require a hiking permit from the local Navajo parks and recreation office - any guided tour will include this - however if you wish to go to lower east waterholes you can get this and go unguided. The site that might help you here is Lake Powell Navajo Tribal Park Have a great trip, it's a wonderful place. |

I was there recently and found the experience both wonderful and frustrating. The beauty is unbelievable but the crowds are also unbelievable. They pack every person possible into the canyon. Sometimes the dust is so thick you can hardly see. I was not on a photography tour but I did observe a group and they were still sitting there most of time waiting for the crowds to move around a corner so they could quickly get a shot.

Yeah - Antelope canyon has certainly become a really popular destination compared to what it was even 10 years ago - you'd have to go back to before the internet to really have perfect times there now... Probably best bet is to be there off of peak tourist season. You might have better luck with some of the other canyons - like canyon X.
Incidentally for those of you interested in slot canyons - there was recently a nice portfolio in Lenswork. Great shots that are a break from the usual slot canyon look... and in black and white to boot... |
