Is there a tried and tested technique for this or is it just pot luck because I always seem to press the shutter just after the lightening has appeared. Any tips welcome

Lightening shots are generally done on a tripod as long exposures. When you've got the shutter open for longer periods of time, the chances of the strike happening while the shutter's open are a lot larger then trying to snap the shutter while it's happening. Find some lightning shots on Flickr, then check out the shutter speeds.

This is the result of your advice. I know it's out of focus but at least I managed to get a shot and the lightening started as I was reading your advice so I didn't get time to check out the settings on flickr, so I took pot luck and did a 20 second exposure. I now have to work on the focus etc but thanks

I read about this a year or so ago. The review I read said that it worked great. You can get it for a Canon or Nikon.
