Default Poster Size Resolution

I have a Sony Alpha 10.2 megapixel camera that has a maximum image size of 3872 x 2592 pixels. If I take a full frame without cropping, using a tripod and high shutter speed, what would be a reasonable size enlargement before I get pixelation? How many pixels per inch on the final image starts showing pixilation? A 16 x 24 inch would be greater than 150 PPI. Is that sufficient? Can I go to 20 x 30?

I've done 24x36" prints with a 10.2MP image (from a D80: ostensibly the same sensor). Not had a problem with it.

If you're concerned, stick to a 16x20 or similar size.

What is acceptable depends on the expected viewing distance. Ever looked at a highway billboard up close?

Yes I have and I totally agree. I am just trying to determine some rules of thumb before doing trial and error on poster size prints.

You can always try increasing the image size by increasing the number of pixels in something like photoshop. I have enlarged 3meg images to 30 x 20 ins with no loss of definition.

Shenanigans.

General rule: 100px for every inch of print, ABSOLUTE minimum. Preferably twice that.
